Finished
Just got the photos edited from the studio shoot this morning. I’m really happy with how this project has turned out; it has been an exciting and valuable process throughout, from initially generating the concept to producing the final pieces.
The pictures above and below show the finished print, map case and compass, the live website URL can be found further down.

Finished website
www.awolmap.com
The website is finished, and I’m happy with how it’s turned out - simple, stylish and functional.
I decided to get rid of the numbers that jumped to a specified walk, as the # associated to the div wasn’t jumping to the right place. I really don’t think this matters as you intuitively scroll across so it’s not missed.
I’m really glad that I’ve created this additional platform for my map as it makes the whole thing a lot more accessible to a wider audience and offers me the chance to update and develop the project easily in the future.

Trim and fold
I collected the final prints from Orange today and I’m really happy with the quality. They’ve done an amazing job with the registration over both sides and the colour is really strong.
After researching into getting my map folded by machine it didn’t seem sensible - I was told the machine can ruin up to 50 copies before it gets the exact folds right. With the cost of these maps being high this was not something I could afford to do.
However, I spent a few hours practising the folds on proofs and got to the point where I was confident it would come out perfect.

Compass assembled
All the parts of the compass have been assembled and joined together with the injected plastic weld, which worked really well. Just have to attach the cord through the hole and it’s done! Really pleased with how it’s turned out, especially considering how difficult it was to put together!
Proper studio shots to come soon, this photo hasn’t done it justice!

The small things…
Just spent a long time cutting rods that are about a mm long to act as the central pin in the compass. By far the fiddliest thing I’ve ever had to do!
The tricky bit was that the spinner was sitting right on the surface of the compass and it looked a bit messy. So i had to cut a 1mm strip of vinyl tape to wrap round the middle of my pin to suspend the spinner half way!
After a couple of failed attempts I got the size right and managed to glue it perfectly in the middle of the compass rose.
Above is a photo of me wrapping the tape round the pin - and to illustrate the scale, that’s my finger print clearly showing!
